Paul and Melissa are a couple that clearly get along well, have a lot of fun, and wanted to express it. For this shoot they brought their new puppy Masuka over and wanted to have some photos made and processed to emulate well-known movie posters. The puppy’s indecision over whether to behave, pose, sit, or walk around made the shoot a little less predictable, and provided laughs for everyone. I’d never done a movie poster photo shoot before, but the whole session was a lot of fun.

We created six different movie themes and the entire shoot was completed in under two hours. If you want to see more of this great couple, or such quite-familiar films as “Sleepless in Edmonton” and “Masuka and Me,” visit the Paul and Melissa Movie Poster photo gallery.

Another season begins at the Walterdale Playhouse and my photography for them continues for the fourth year in a row. The first play of the 2010 – 2011 season is Perfect Pie by Judith Thompson, with the cast of Michele Vance Hehir, Nicole Lemay, Holly Cinnamon and Stephanie Wigston.

Model: Elle-Vie, Makeup: Kelly Ible, Photography: Douglas Dollars / RAD GRANDPA

Laura (Elle Vie) is the latest Edmonton model we’ve had the pleasure of photographing, and our setting was the Edmonton river valley during a great autumn evening. Her light complexion almost glowed against the dark red leaves and her pose ideas made the shoot a snap. You can see more of Elle Vie’s model photography shoot in our gallery. [click to see more…]

Robert is the first client to take us up on our Social network portrait package, and it was good fun having him in-studio, talking about the neighborhood, and recording his upbeat personality. Being familiar with the Whyte Avenue / Queen Alexandra neighborhood and hearing Robert’s impressions of the area reassured me that we’ve chosen well to set up shop here and that it really is something special being in this part of Edmonton. With the leaves beginning to fall, and Autumn on its way, there’s something special in the air.

We also created a black and white version of the social network photo of Robert for his gallery. Check it out if you’re interested, or to see a larger version of the photo below.

Our brand new 85mm f/1.2 lens arrived the afternoon I was preparing for Robert’s shoot, and I like the results. The lens is considered by Canon to be their “definitive portraiture lens” and is absolutely one of the best portraiture lenses I’ve ever had the pleasure of using. The lens is known for its smooth transitions between focus areas and its fantastic color reproduction, and I can attest that it absolutely lives up to our expectations. All portraits through to the end of 2010 will be using this new lens, with no increase in our rates or portrait and wedding package pricing. I’m looking forward to seeing the results, and I think you’ll like them as well.

As we like to remind folks, we’re a small Edmonton portrait photography studio. If you’d like to get your portraits taken, have your event photographed for media, or have any questions, get in touch with us!

Out most recent shoot was for a play that isn’t running yet! Edmonton local magazine Avenue Magazine planned to do a piece in December for the Walterdale Playhouse. The production of Much Ado About Nothing goes on in December and I got to see the most brief of sneak-peeks.

Model: Tunc Gunes, Photography: Douglas Dollars / RAD GRANDPA

Tunc Gunes joined myself and some other Edmonton photographers as the latest model to be subject to the warm tones of autumn leaves and quickly-cooling evenings. The Edmonton river valley served as a great backdrop to the scene and we got through the photo session without being attacked by mosquitoes or any river creatures. You can see more of Tunc in our gallery from yet another successful Edmonton portrait photography session. [click to see more…]

The R in the acronym that is RAD GRANDPA, Rachel, decided to humor me for a quick portrait test with our new studio backdrop. She looks lovely and her good humor came through easily. You can see more of Rachel, including our new way of styling photos to look like old Kodachrome prints from the 1950s and 1960s (not shown below) in Rachel’s personal portrait photography gallery.

Saturday had one of the most interesting and exciting events I’ve seen in the Edmonton in quite some time, and I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to photograph it. Local 124 hosted the Highlevel downhill longboard race in the river valley, which features long skateboards, steep hills, sharp curves and good old fashioned racing competition!

To quote Rachel, the R in Rad Grandpa, “Speed, smashes, and crashes!” I think you’ll agree. Check out the photos below, see the Highlevel downhill longboard race gallery, and get in touch with us to photograph and capture your next event in all its glory. Our prices are quite reasonable, and we’re very fun.

This Saturday afternoon featured the fantastic Edmonton Dragon Boat Festival in the Edmonton’s north Saskatchewan river. Teams of 18 (20 including crew) from all around the city competed to see who could work together the best. Team Bioware dominated the races that I was able to watch, often beating other teams by more than two dragon boat lengths!

While our specialty is portrait and wedding photography in Edmonton, we shoot a lot of events as well. Contact us at any time to discuss our event photography or to have us photograph your concert.

It’s a little-known secret that if you slip the city of Edmonton $20 during the summer they’ll let you in the zoo after hours to photograph some of the lovely animal friends up close and personal. We visited last night and caught a lucky break against the intense evening storms Edmonton has been seeing recently.

Our time with the zoo was brief, and we missed our chance to greet my personal favorite red pandas, but in the 90 minute session we still managed to photograph everything from armadillos to wallabies and a few exotic animals in between, covering thirteen varieties of animal in all. Edmonton Valley Zoo’s own Lucy the Elephant came out to greet us, too!

We faced dangerous and wild beasts and did so with smiles on our faces. If you have a particularly interesting pet you want given the photographic star treatment, get in touch!

Despite poor weather in our outdoor shoot of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, the indoor production of the play for Edmonton is a much warmer affair. Religion, prostitution, the police, love, and more are featured in this fun musical theatre piece once again held by my great friends the Walterdale Playhouse. We were there to get the portrait photography and to get a sneak peek of what should be a very active production!

Our outdoor Best Little Whorehouse gallery is available for your viewing pleasure with a few shots from the show below.

Photographing local theatre is a great way to news out to the media. My work for the Edmonton theatre community has appeared in not only Edmonton’s weekly papers (SEE and VUE) but also the St. Albert Gazette, The Edmonton Journal and The Edmonton Sun. We’re a small Edmonton portrait photography studio. If you’d like to get your portraits taken, have your event photographed for media, or have any questions, get in touch with us!

Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds made The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas a household name, but our local Edmonton Walterdale theatre asked me to shoot some promotional and portrait shots for the play. Unfortunately the weather was incredibly chilly and cloudy out, but the ladies fought the strong winds and our outdoor shoot was over as quick as possible to get them back into the warmth and safety of the theatre.

Much like our previous series of One-Act Plays photography, the Walterdale playhouse has once again closed out its play season with a show of one-act plays by local playwrights. We were there to get the portrait and theatre photographs for the media this year as well. Three of my favorite photos from the evening are below, but you can see the entire 2010 one-act plays gallery as well.

The Mailorder Bride was our latest Edmonton portrait and theatre photography mission. The cast were experts in their roles as usual in this tale of a man who pressures the wild son of a dead friend into marrying a mail-order bride in an attempt to settle him down.

Our Mail-order Bride gallery is available for your viewing along with the photos below.
